How to keep your feet dry without looking like a Dork

We all know how awful it is to have soppy wet feet in winter – in Australia it’s inevitable because we get used to dry weather and flimsy shoes (see rubi shoes). Then when the rain starts to pour (like tonight or March 22nd) we start going over our options. Wellies? They look ghastly no matter what prints they have on them. Boots? Most aren’t waterproof or durable enough to get through torrential rain, and those with heels and platforms to get you out of the way of puddles really aren’t practical for uni or a day out just in case it rains.

Well I think I’ve found a solution. A cute, quirky solution that is a cross between boots and wellies and bubblegum. Enter Melissa VW ankle boots.

Perth in Colours

As I was checking the outskirts of Perth while on the train, the sun reflected off of the window and illuminated heaps of scratches dug deep into the plexiglass. I stepped back to get the full image, and it revealed absolutely nothing. Just a bunch of shitty lines that some group of kids probably decided to create on one bored, hot, meaningless day. If you’re going to deface property, then at least do a good job doing it! All of a sudden the best idea in the world came to me… I’ll freaking document Perth graffiti! Anything from the shit scratches on train windows, to the masterpiece murals on abandoned (or not) brick walls. And so my ventures through sketchy alley-ways and under bridges began.

My favourite thing about searching and finding graffiti (actually graffito is the correct plural… which is what I’ll be using for now on) were the outrageous spots which they were either hidden or very publicly displayed. In most cases, the more congested and populated the area, the more concealed and hidden the graffito. I say most cases because of the infamous Heaven Spot pieces. Any piece which is drawn up in a hard to reach area or risks the outcome of one actually going to heaven, is given the righteous name, Heave Spot.

Okay, so here’s the run down on tags, wildstyles, murals, stickers, and any other term I can think of:

Most of the tags (small scribbles) are found on posts, along alleyway walls, on posters, or on street signs. These tags are generally used for territorial purposes by gangs or groups of hooligans, although sometimes they’re just made by some lonely single who just can’t find a lady.

Wildstyle is a term coined for those pieces you’ll see and stand in front of for 5 minutes trying to figure out what they say… and never actually figure it out. They’re my personal favourites because they involve shading, multiple dimensions to create depth, multiple colours, and a whole lot of creativity.

Murals are murals. They can be wildstyle, tags, or just about anything that covers an area larger than your arm span.

Stickers… well you know those “Hello My Name Is…” stickers? Ya, just stick a tiny tag on the blank area and you’ve just created your graffiti sticker!

And well… that’s about it!

Are these pieces art? Hells ya! I don’t care if they deface private property (as long as it’s not mine). They still take time and creativity to make. Now this doesn’t mean that I think it’s right to be going on private property and defacing it, but I can’t help but to crack a little smile when I see an amazing piece drawn up.

The Voltaire twins are shooting a music video for their track D.I.L. and they need you to lend a hand! Literally. Asking for all kinds of hands, including varying skin tones, bendy fingers and marks such as scars and tattoos. So if you want your 15 mins of fame (or rather if you want your hands to have their 3:36 of fame) rock up to curtin between 4 and 6pm, which is when a lot of hands will be needed or anytime really because apparently times are also flexible. They also want you to know that your hand might be the next Tom Cruise, I don’t know if that’s a good thing or that they mean your hands will start believing in weird aliens and a dogmatic religion based on a sci fi series.

ARA Forum : Animal Experimentation Under Scrutiny

Until recently, critical evaluations of the accuracy of claims that animal experimentation is essential for the advancement of biomedical knowledge have been rare. Several large-scale systematic reviews of the value of the animal experiments have now been published in scientific and medical journals and the outcomes have been consistent: animal experiments have contributed far less than advocates would have us believe.

The purpose of this forum is to discuss those reviews, and outline the alternatives to invasive animal experiments in biomedical research, toxicity testing and education.

ARA is a volunteer-run not for profit animal rights organisation that campaigns for the abolition of animal exploitation.

Andrew Knight trained to become a vet at Perth’s Murdoch University, holds a post-graduate Certificate in Animal Welfare Science and is a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics. He’s the President of Animals Count: a UK political party for people and animals; the Director of Animal Consultants International, which provides multidisciplinary expertise for animal issues; and the Founder of the Extreme Vegan Sporting Association.

I did, when I came across the blog “Teaching the Indie Kids To Dance Again” @ indiekids.org

Sadly, it’s no longer updated, but it’s still a small mine of information about obscure artists and reviews of songs. (The MP3s linked on the site are now non-existent but it’s still worth a read. The last post features Australia’s own Augie March, who were obscure in the US at the time. At 53,634 listeners I think they may still be.)

I don’t really need to continue to talk the blog up, do I?
