Im new here. Im Cale, a.k.a. Sleepyhead. As a friend of your favorite blog mistress, I was asked to contribute to this blog and seeing as I am trying to procrastinate from uni work, I figured this was a good a way as any. Drake is a newish rapper/singer on Lil’ Wayne’s Cash Money Label. He’s recently dropped his new mixtape “So Far Gone” which features him singing/rapping over/creating new versions of songs from Lykki Li, Peter Bjorn and John, Santigold, Kanye West and Jay Z. Speaking of Kanye, with Drake, think of him as the 808′s and Heartbreaks version of Kanye, except he can actually sing. Okay so this is a shameless plug for my friends’ band, but they’re such nice guys so I gotta put the word out for them. They’re a local Perth band and have been around for a bit now playing a bunch of gigs. Their can be summed up as essentially epic, epic post rock. I think thats the right genre, but you make up your own mind, go see them supporting the Silents this Friday at Amps.

Okay, these guys fucking (can I swear on this blog?) ROCK. Tiny band out of Texas, they make kick ass rock music and they release a new cover of a song every month. If you don’t understand any of that^ then you’re probably best suited to ignore this entry and go back to mininova, demonoid, the pirate bay or whatever torrent-gutter you crawled out of. The world of private trackers is only for the priveleged few, and you won’t get a free invite if you know nothing about transcoding, irc, bitrates and ratios.

What you’ll need to get an invite: An irc client, a good knowledge of torrent use and creation, a good understanding of music formats and bitrates, an understanding of torrent clients and ratio, and a good internet connection (or a friend who has one).

What to do:

1. Go to http://speedtest.net and do a speed test. Get the png url (it should look like http://speedtest.net/results/12345678.png or something like that) and copy it.

2. Connect to irc.what.cd and join the #what.cd-invites channel

3. type in ‘!queue http://speedtest.net/results/14235531.png’ – where the url is your speedtest result (or your friends). You’ll now be put in queue for an interview. During the interview process, someone will test your knowledge of bitrates and music formats and transcoding – so it pays to have a good understanding.

While you wait, it might be a good idea to check out http://whatintro.webs.com/index.html. It has all the information (and links to information) you will need, to pass with flying colours.

Once you pass (if you pass) the interviewer will ask for your email address (no hotmail accounts) and send you the invite. Happy times!

Hidden Shoal are an independent label who specialise in producing and distributing laid back and/or quirky music ranging from shoegaze, post-rock, minimalist and indie to trip-hop, electro and ambient.

As of yet, they have three sampler albums out; The Least Vestige of Land, The Garden of Forking Paths, and Limit of Maps.
If you’re into checking out some pretty awesome (and quite obscure) artists then this is the go for you. And if you aren’t, I suggest you open your mind and have a go anyway.

Billie the Vision & the Dancers, apart from being a mouthful, is a fine exemplar of this genre. Though they do dig a bit deeper. Their music touches on a few issues (in a happy singsong way of course), and throughout the albums we follow the romantic exploits of a fellow who falls for a girl called Lilly, and then falls in love with Jessica.
