Hey

Im new here. Im Cale, a.k.a. Sleepyhead. As a friend of your favorite blog mistress, I was asked to contribute to this blog and seeing as I am trying to procrastinate from uni work, I figured this was a good a way as any. PS I’m not actually a vegan/vegetarian, but i have no beef with anyone who chooses to live their life that way (Pun definitely intended haha)

Anyways seeing as this is a blog about the cutting edge of stuff thats cool at the moment, i figured id do a biggish post in order to catch people up on what i think is cool.

Drake

Drake is a newish rapper/singer on Lil’ Wayne’s Cash Money Label. He’s recently dropped his new mixtape “So Far Gone” which features him singing/rapping over/creating new versions of songs from Lykki Li, Peter Bjorn and John, Santigold, Kanye West and Jay Z. Speaking of Kanye, with Drake, think of him as the 808′s and Heartbreaks version of Kanye, except he can actually sing. Get it for FREE (thats right free.99) over at http://www.octobersveryown.blogspot.com/

These Shipwrecks

Okay so this is a shameless plug for my friends’ band, but they’re such nice guys so I gotta put the word out for them. They’re a local Perth band and have been around for a bit now playing a bunch of gigs. Their can be summed up as essentially epic, epic post rock. I think thats the right genre, but you make up your own mind, go see them supporting the Silents this Friday at Amps.

http://www.myspace.com/theseshipwrecks PS thats a rehearsal tape, do see them live, they’ll literally melt your brain.

Harlem

Okay, these guys fucking (can I swear on this blog?) ROCK. Tiny band out of Texas, they make kick ass rock music and they release a new cover of a song every month. So far they have done a Devo song, a techno classic, that Goodbye Horses from Silence of the Lambs, amongst others. But yeah “South of France”, an original song is a must listen. Check ‘em out http://www.myspace.com/harlemduh

Alright thats all I can really think of right about now. Im sure I’ll think of/ find something new soon and ill post it up. Untill then here’s a shameless plug (really another one?) for a DJ mix I did the other day. Its electro mostly and hopefully you enjoy it. Once again, the price is right (FREE) so who are you to complain? haha. But seriously, enjoy and any feedback is well appreciated. find it here

Once there was a utopia called OiNK’s Pink Palace, where people could come together and share music from all over the world at fast speeds and be happy together. Then the bad people came and took away the palace and all the people were lost. They needed their music at 192kbps and above but there were no places to go.
Then suddenly out of the ashes sprung What.cd, and the people rejoiced.

If you don’t understand any of that^ then you’re probably best suited to ignore this entry and go back to mininova, demonoid, the pirate bay or whatever torrent-gutter you crawled out of. The world of private trackers is only for the priveleged few, and you won’t get a free invite if you know nothing about transcoding, irc, bitrates and ratios.

What you’ll need to get an invite: An irc client, a good knowledge of torrent use and creation, a good understanding of music formats and bitrates, an understanding of torrent clients and ratio, and a good internet connection (or a friend who has one).

What to do:

1. Go to http://speedtest.net and do a speed test. Get the png url (it should look like http://speedtest.net/results/12345678.png or something like that) and copy it.

2. Connect to irc.what.cd and join the #what.cd-invites channel

3. type in ‘!queue http://speedtest.net/results/14235531.png’ – where the url is your speedtest result (or your friends). You’ll now be put in queue for an interview. During the interview process, someone will test your knowledge of bitrates and music formats and transcoding – so it pays to have a good understanding.

While you wait, it might be a good idea to check out http://whatintro.webs.com/index.html. It has all the information (and links to information) you will need, to pass with flying colours.

Once you pass (if you pass) the interviewer will ask for your email address (no hotmail accounts) and send you the invite. Happy times!

Girl talk are releasing their album (Feed the Animals) over the internet with the ‘pay what you want’ scheme that Radiohead pioneered. The only difference is that regardless of what you pay, you still get top quality 320kbps tracks – and if you pay more than $5 or $10 you get FLAC versions and a copy of the CD when it is released, respectively.

For those you that don’t know, Girl talk does mash ups – he makes a new song from snippets of other songs. Night Ripper was a great album, and I’ve heard Feed the Animals is amazing. Get it, it’s not like there’s any reason not to.

For those who don’t know, Audiosurf is an independent game that creates courses for each individual song it is presented with. Touched on in an earlier entry.

If you’re into checking out some pretty awesome (and quite obscure) artists then this is the go for you.

More indie pop, what do you know.

Can’t ever get enough of those bright colours, and happy tinkly jangly chords.
Billie the Vision & the Dancers, apart from being a mouthful, is a fine exemplar of this genre. Though they do dig a bit deeper. Their music touches on a few issues (in a happy singsong way of course), and throughout the albums we follow the romantic exploits of a fellow who falls for a girl called Lilly, and then falls in love with Jessica.

“At first impression, Billie the Vision might seem as yet another pop band with no apparent worries. But if you were to dig a little deeper, you would soon discover that they’re not always about expressing joy, happiness and dancing. What is more, their music actually manages to transcend generation gaps. Billie, moreover, is not a person per se, but rather represents the inherent quality the band wants to encourage their listeners to find within themselves. Billie is about not being afraid of being naive, pretentious or corny, to be proud of what you are…”
- Billie the Vision & the Dancers at last.fm

Anyway check them out. Either here or at last.fm.
The whole album “I was so unpopular in school and now they’re buying me this beautiful bicycle” is free to download.
Because all tracks on last.fm are controlled by the artists, yes this does rank the band alongside The Flashbulb (ie. they uploaded all the music and allowed people to download it). Free albums for the win, don’t forget to support the band if you like.

‘The thing RIAA is scared of is that their billion dollar backbone can no longer shelter people from exploring music themselves. Their business plan had evolved into telling the world what they will want to listen to and buy, and now they’ll have to actually compete with talented artists again. As the people regain control of the market, music will be judged by it’s content again and will be subjected to it’s own Darwinism. It is a very interesting time for the music industry…and since my entire life is devoted to making music, bring it on. I hope that this situation with my new record proves to other labels and artists that giving people exactly what they want is the smartest way to conduct any business.’
- Benn Jordan, from an interview by TorrentFreak

The revolution is here. We live in magnificent times.

Alphabasic – the first record company to release an album in FLAC (lossless) and V0 format via torrents for free. For those of us who have what.cd and/or St Music, you’ll already be on the ball but for all you waffles.fm members – sorry you missed out.

Basically Alphabasic have released an album called Soundtrack to a Vacant Life by the Flashbulb to What.cd and more recently St Music. There are also non-exclusive mirrors here, from which you can download the album.

With the album is a html file containing this message:

Hello listener…downloader…pirate…pseudo-criminal…

If you can read this, then you’ve more than likely downloaded this album from a peer to peer network or torrent.

You probably expect the rest of this message to tell you that you’re hurting musicians and breaking just about every copyright law in the book. Well, it won’t tell you that.

What I would like to tell you is that my record label understands that a large portion of people pirate music because it is easier than buying it. CDs scratch easily, most pay-per-download sites have poor quality and shitty DRM protection, and vinyl is near impossible to find or ship without hassle.
In many cases I wonder why people buy CDs at all anymore. A few like the tangible artwork, some haven’t adapted to MP3s yet, but most do it because they have a profound love for music and want to support the artists making it. Kind of restores your faith in humanity for a moment eh?

So, now what?
Like the album? About to go “support the artist” on iTunes?
Well, don’t.
Alphabasic is currently in a legal battle against Apple because NONE of our material (Sublight Records included) receives a dime of royalty from the vast amount of sales iTunes has generated using our material.

Want to buy a CD just to show your support?
If you don’t particularly like CDs, don’t bother.
Retailers like Best Buy and Amazon spike the price so high that their cut is often 8 times higher than the artist’s. Besides, most CDs are made out of unrecyclable plastic and leave a nasty footprint in your environment.

If you do particularly like CDs, buy them from the label (in our case, alphabasic.com). After manufacturing costs are recuperated, our artists usually receive over 90% of the actual money coming out of your wallet.
In addition, all of our physical products are made out of 100% recycled material.

Want to show your support?
Go here and browse our library of lossless, DRM-free downloads.
Already have that?
Then feel free to donate whatever you want to your favorite artist. 100% will go directly to them.
Hell, you can even donate a penny just to thank the artist.

If you really like ‘The Flashbulb – Soundtrack To A Vacant Life’ and want to show your support without it going to greedy retailers, distributors, and coked-up label reps, then click the button below.
If you send us your mailing address, Alphabasic may occasionally send you various goodies (overstocks, stickers, even rare CDs) in appreciation and encouragement for your support.

Thanks for reading.
Who knows if my little business plan here will work to fund new releases, but even failure is better than the crappy label/distributor/retailer system musicians have suffered from for over 50 years.
We hope you enjoy the music as much as we do releasing it.
Finally, if you plan on sharing this release, please include this file. The only reason it is here is to show the listener where he can support his favorite artists!

Benn Jordan
CEO – Alphabasic Records

Album’s really good. Listen. Genre is electronic/jazz. And I will be donating. Think of it as funding the revolution. If other record companies/artists see this works then they might be willing follow suit.

Game over.
OiNK wins.
